Residents of Khanty-Mansiysk as orienteers

Before the European Ski Orienteering Championships and World Cup Final 2020 residents of Khanty-Mansiysk were able to dip their toes in this sport. As a part of the opening party at the ski resort «Khvoynyy Urman» a quest «Who said «Boo!» was held for all guests of the event.

Just like professional orienteers, the contestants had to find 16 control points hidden around the ski resort. To match the opening-party theme, traditional control points were replaced by famous horror movie characters. Using maps the contestants had to find all the creatures within 20 minutes time limit. For each missing control point 3 penalty minutes were added to the competitor’s course time.

In orienteering speed is not the only important skill, the ability to navigate through unfamiliar areas and plan the course are also essential. As it turned out, the challenge wasn’t easy. Some of the contestants were not able to find all control points in the given timeframe. Others completed the task quite easily. Three participants with the best time received prizes from hosts. Besides, all contestants were given presents for their effort.

It is to be reminded that the European Ski Orienteering Championships and World Cup Final 2020 will take place at the Alexander Filipenko Winter Sports Center in March, 2020. About 120 athletes from 25 countries plan to take part in the championships.
