Khanty-Mansiysk gets ready to host the races of the European Ski Orienteering Championships and World Cup Final 2020.
The competitions will take place in March 2020 at the Alexander Filipenko Winter Sports Center of Khanty-Mansiysk. These days the city was visited by the officials of the event. Among them are the Vice-President of the Russian Orienteering Federation Alexander Bliznevsky and the technical delegate of the International Orienteering Federation (IOF) Sixten Sild. Together with the executive directorate of the competitions the delegation has discussed the process of getting ready for the event, including such issues like logistics, protocol, security, refereeing and preparing the venue for the new format of races. It is to be noted that the Alexander Filipenko Winter Sports Center is well-known by its world-class biathlon and cross-country skiing events but has never hosted major ski orienteering competitions before.
Recently the European Ski Orienteering Championships and World Cup Final 2020 in Khanty-Mansiysk were presented at the IOF Congress in Norway. “There’s a huge interest in Khanty-Mansiysk among athletes. Not only as a beautiful Russian city but as a place where sport events are conducted at the highest organizational level”, – said Alexander Bliznevsky.
Taking into account the format of the event, which includes covering the distance with a map and a compass, athletes will be making their routes not only along the existing ski tracks but also among trees of the nature park “Samarovsky chugas”. To make it possible the organizers need to clean the forest from fallen wood. These works will start in the nearest future.
It is to be reminded that competitions will take place on March’8-16’2020. About 120 best ski orienteering athletes will compete in five disciplines – sprint, mixed sprint relay, middle distance, long distance and relay.
